Iceland, day 4: Waterfalls, stink pits and lava mazes

This morning over breakfast (scrambled eggs, veggies, and sausage. Come on, my idea of roughing it isn’t crappy food) we tried to make a little plan for the day and set out some potential campsites (trying to pay attention to what ones are open and the costs). Decided on a campsite and a first stop of the day at Dettifoss.

Our cooking set up

On the way, we saw a sign for Hafragilsfoss, so plan out the window, we turned off the road. So glad we did! It was stunning. We walked around a bit and took it in (somehow we were the only ones there).

Next was really Dettifoss. This is the largest waterfall in Europe. We got there early so were able to avoid the tour buses that role through. We decided to take the hike to Selfoss. A great little hike on a beautiful day. Made some grilled cheese sammie’s for lunch on our camp stove in the parking lot and set out again.

Selfoss

Dettifoss

Namafjall Hverir which translates to “Bog of Eternal Stench” (ok, not really, but wow did this ever smell like shit. For real). It is a geothermal spot noted for its bubbling pools of mud & steaming fumaroles emitting sulphuric gas (thank you Google).

Hiked up and around Hverfjall, 600m up and 3.2 km around the crater, with breath taking views from the top.

This is the crater, you can’t tell at al from any of these photos.

Dimmuborgir is a maze of natural made lava stone sculptures. All in all, today was pretty active.

After looking at the campsites in the Myvatn area, we decided to hop back North a bit (based on the amount of people in the Myvatn area, and the higher prices at the campsites) to set up for the night.

We are really off plan now so who knows what tomorrow will bring. All I know is tonight consists of BBQ’d Icelandic salmon, beer and a shower.

Skal!

The salmon looked awesome! Great looking trip so far. A bit chilly? Glad you kids are having a great time. Be safe!

That salmon dinner was killer. It’s definitely not hot here, but when it isn’t blowing wind and rain, it’s quite lovely.
