Iceland, day 6: Hengifoss, road side stops, and Hofn

Thanks to all who have commented. Sorry I was late in replying. My tech support (Greg) had all of those emails going to our spam folder!

Last night we finally saw a glimpse of the Northern lights. It’s been fairly cloudy each night which is not ideal for viewing.
Woke up, ate some breakfast, showered and re-filled the van’s water tank (still couldn’t find anyone to pay for the camp site, so last night was free I guess!)

We set out on an early morning 5km hike to Hengifoss. Most of these sites are best when done first thing in the morning before any tour buses show up. There were only a couple other people out when we got there. The scenery and the waterfall was pretty spectacular. It is one of Iceland’s tallest waterfalls. We decided a hike is a great way to start each day so will make an effort to do that for the rest of the trip.

Re-stocked at a gas station (read, used the free wifi to download more episodes of Friends and some movies, the evenings are cold so we tend to wind down with a beer and some Netflix).

Our plan was to head to Hofn via the coast through the East Fjords. We heard about a brewery in Breidalsvik, Beljandi Brugghus, so aimed there for a stop. Turns out it wasn’t open (most things in Iceland close at 6:00pm, this place didn’t open until 6:00pm. Go figure). Stopped for a quick lunch near the beach of some Kabuto noodle bowls.

There was a short rest stop near by so we pulled in. Noticed a lighthouse and tried the door. Well, it opened so clearly we went in.

The rest of the drive consisted if pulling over when we saw cool things (trying to slow ourselves down and ditch the North American way of “get there as fast as you can).

Tonight we are staying in Hofn. Not too sure what tomorrow will bring, but we are confident that it will be amazing. This is for sure our most picturesque campsite yet.

Skal!
