the berrison adventure life

Iceland, day 7: Hoffell, a large glacier and Vik

The Hofn camp site was PACKED, there weren’t any other sites in the area, so this could be why. That being said, on the North East corner of it where we were, there was only us and three other campers. Not sure why no one wanted to be in that area, but sucks for them. We had an awesome view of the full moon on the lake at night and the best sunrise in the morning.

We heard about the hot pools at Hoffell and a hiking trail right near Vatnajökull glacier . The plan was to go for a hike, then a dip in the pools. As per usual, plans change. The GPS ended up taking us right up to the glacier via car, so there went the hike! It’s ok though, it was more of a long walk in a straight line than a hike. The hot pools were great. There are five pools each of varying temperature. It wasn’t busy at all so we got changed and grabbed a pool. It’s just so relaxing sitting in a hot pool in the mountains. We were able to shower too! As we were leaving three huge tour trucks showed up. We have good timing.

We stopped in at Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon (a fun note, turns out a friend from Thunder Bay is also in Iceland right now. We missed him at the lagoon by about an hour. Damn). It was pretty neat to see the glacier breaking off into icebergs. We went across the road to the beach to have some lunch.

Fjallsárlón iceberg lagoon was much smaller, but interesting all the same. The size of this glacier is ridiculous.

We were going to check out Skaftafell, but missed the turn off haha (their road signs aren’t huge and there is only one warning you what is coming up). Yes we could have turned around, but it was 3:00. Too early to set up camp, too late to go out on big adventures (it’s been 7 days, we are getting a little tired). Onward to Vik! We have a semi thought out plan for the next 2 days as we are almost done. Le sigh.

For tonight, BBQ’d Icelandic lamb and salad. We needed something fresh. This road trip diet is killing me!

Skal!
